Finally had the time to take some pictures of my Mosin Nagant M39.
I own this rifle for about three years now and it was my first Mosin Nagant.
You could say this rifle started my Mosin Nagant addiction.:D
It’s a 1942 VKT M39 build on a 1906 Izhevsk receiver.
VKT stands for Valtion Kivääritehdas or State Rifle Factory.

The Finns never build their own bolts and receivers.
They modified and replaced stocks, hand guards, barrels, front sights and rear sights, but they never ever changed or replaced the heart of the weapon.
From the first Finnish Mosin Nagant M91 until the last Mosin Nagant M39 they used the original bolt and receiver.
IMHO a compliment for the designers Sergei Ivanovich Mosin and Leon Nagant.

A couple of years ago nobody wanted to buy these “Russian” rifles, so prices were relatively low.
Sport shooters however found out that some Finnish Mosin Nagant models, like the M39, were great shooters and prices went sky high.
I bought mine for about $ 100.00 in Germany.
Since then prices went up to about $ 175.00 to $ 200.00 for a M39……if you can find one.

Here are some pictures:

Some “nice to know things” about the M39.

1)The M39 is the last made Mosin Nagant rifle in the long line of Mosin Nagant rifles and carbines.

2)Only 130.000 M39 rifles were made.
70.000 by SAKO, 52.000 by VKT and the rest by Tikkakoski.

3)The early models M39 (about 6.200), produced by SAKO, have a stock without the “pistol-grip”.
These rifles are considered highly collectible.

4)Not one M39 left the factory before it had produced a 3 cm or 1.2” group at the 150 meter range.

The best of the modifications on the M27, M28 and M28/30 are combined in the M39.
Despite this, the M39 is a very recognizable weapon with its very own characteristics.
IMHO one of the best Mosin Nagant rifles you can buy.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

PS: Pictures are a bit large.
Let me know when it becomes a problem.

...that's a great looking M39 Pete.
The wood looks fantastic.

When I started reloading for mine I used 150 grains .308 FMJ bullets by PMC and 24 grains of VihtaVuori N110 powder behind it.
This was a reduced load.
They performed OK but not great.
Later I bought some casted 210 grains .311 GC bullets from a member of our gun club and put 18 grains N110 behind it.

Image
210 gn casted bullet with GC.

These performed better then I expected.
I still use these when reloading for my M39.
I just love to take this rifle to the range.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Powder is very expensive over here, but the Vihtavuori is the cheapest we can get.
I use the N140(slower) powder in my Dutch M95 and the Tokarev SVT 40.
The faster burning N110 powder is just great for reduced loads in my M39.
It should also perform good in the M91/30 that I have on layaway in Germany.
I'll pick that one up in the last week of September after I get back from manoeuvres in Germany with our battalion.
Can't wait to try that 91/30 on the range.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

My first Finn was an M91 which cost me $155 and it started a real plague of "Mosinsanity" that I haven;t recovered from yet! Funny thing the rifle was spotless and had this funny extra big B on it and a funny little proof mark on the side which turned out to be a Liege proof. Least I started with a good one even if it was dumb luck! Nice M39 for sure! I think I am over the 30 mark now on them, just got one over the weekend. They are good shooters but I have trouble seeing the knotch in the back sight. I have found that coating the rear blade with flourecent green paint makes the knotch stand out reall good though! Don't reload and never plan to I just use surplus ammo. Love Yugo when I can find it and it is getting tough to find.

The M39 in the picture was my first Mosin Nagant.
It started my addiction for which there is no cure anymore........and I like it. :D
Got my collectors license just last year and I'm now up to 13 Mosin Nagants.
Got an M91/30 on layaway that I'll pick up in the last week of September.
The M91/30 will not appear on my collectors license, but on my shooters license so this one will follow me to the range.
Can't wait to see how she performs.
Thanks for your input Bill.
I appreciate it.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Man, Dutch, you are spot on!
I just cant stop proving to myself just how good they really are.
This last week I caught 8 Caribou, and only one needed more than one shot (4 actually, as I hit the sides of his neck twice, then a clean miss before getting the brain, while running away, so, yes, I'm less than perfect)The others were standing still and thats a death sentance in my sights.
I finnaly got a vid of a good 250 yard shot, if you step over to My corner and have a 5 minute break, I think the proof is in the pudding!

Thank You Sergi Mosin, and those guys at SAKO!!!!

If Mosin were Greek, hed be a God.

Sure, no problem Don.
I'll take some new pictures today and post them early this evening.
That will be late afternoon for you guys.
Right now I'm working in the garden and I have to finish that job today.
Not because Mrs. Mosin ordered me to, but because I want to.  :lol :lol

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin

Thanks LoLo.
I love to just sit down in "my room" and enjoy the view.

Nothing wrong with the VKT.
Got one of those myself and I like them with bruises and bumps.
Let me know how the VKT performs on the range.

Met vriendelijke groet,

Martin
