The previous topic brought up a question. I know that they had lots of walnut trees in England that were eventually use up making gun stocks. Does anyone know what where and what kinds of walnuts were grown in mainland Europe at the turn of the nineteenth, and beginning of the twentieth century?

I would have no idea.

I went to the library and downloaded the file (25 meg) on a flash drive. My dialup server would have a nervous breakdown trying to transfer a pdf file that large to me. The book has a lot of wood species in it and is a good initial source that a lot of people should be interested in. It may be old, but it is fairly comprehensive. It is not in color but makes up for it in words and info. Apparently a lot of names apply to the same walnut and that is english walnut= circassian=etc. I think I am going to compile as many photos of these type woods for reference.
