I think they were dunked in a 55 gallon drum of linseed oil. I don't know at what temperature.

Well I know the purist's will not like this but I decided to do as I did with my post war sniper and that is 1-2 coats of BLO then stain it close to the correct color and then a few coats of polyurethane.

This gives me the correct shellac look but is a much better finish. Another thing I have done (but this one was scratched up already) is if the shellac is still intact i'll put a few coats of SPRAY polyurethane over the finish and this has done a good job of sealing/preventing scratches without changing the color.

Now I have to wait for the rifle!!

Amber Shellac and nothing but that! Why do you think they looked so chipped and scratched as refurbs and the field tested ones are almost devoid of finish? I sometimes wonder if they were dipped in a bucket of shellac? At times they sure look like it. I leave finishes and arguments about them all alone! Reason I have many Finns and Russians that are covered with cosmoline when I got them and sure don't look like what they say they are! Doubtlessly an endless topic! Bill

Well I'm a little late but here are the photos of my once ugly shellacked early stock now mated up to my 1925 Isky. This is a light stain and then 2 coats of blo and then a coat of mineral oil.

Thanks

Not to bad for no sanding!! Lots of scrubbing and scrapping and then rubbing. It takes about a week or so and then even the high shine will tone down. Its still a Mosin redo but at least I have the rifle with a close to same era stock now. And best of all I have a real nice post era stock for the next rifle!! Now I have to find the rifle!!

Martin

Thanks! I still have yet to put that one away. I keep picking it up and looking at it. Maybe by the time my wife tells me to put it away I might.

OK here is one of the poly ones. This rifle turned out looking just like the ichy shellack job but with a better/stronger finish.
