Seller sez it's an M44. Looks like an M38 in an M44 stock... but is an antique long rifle cut down like that legit? An extra talented bubba?

Whatever the case, it's sure interesting. I was considering bidding, but bought something else instead. SW

Something looks fishy to me.

It's really a 91/59, which is a cut down m/91-30 or M/91 to approx. m/38 specs.

I wondered about that but couldn't see if the numbers were milled from the rear sight. SW

That's what it looks like a 91/59 in an M44 stock. I had one some years ago. It was an early 1900's rifle cut down. It even looked like an attempt to put a M44 bayo on it was eventually discarded. The pin hole/groove in the front of the barrel was filled with a metal plug & ground down to match the profile & re-blued. Wasn't bubba either. Like a dummy I traded it off years ago

I think these were called 91/38. a little different from the 91/59 as the rear sights were replaced, not 91/30 sights with range increments milled off. harder to find than a 91/59, and early dates like this one do show up sometimes. prices on the 91/38's generally range a little higher than 91/59's.
lot of folks think the "circle t" mark on the top flat of the receiver indicate czech origin of the cutdown. y'all have a good day, Keith

IMHO this is a Mosin Nagant M91/38, which is a cut down M91.
M91/59's were cut down M91/30's or in rare cases cut down M91's.
I'd love to add this one to my collection.

Sure wish it was easier to buy rifles like this one in the US.

Well I thank you for the offer but I just committed to a CZ 24 made in 1937 and maybe a Savage 1907 pistol (if I can prove it's a French issue). It would be nice to have it though.

You guys are right. Giving it a second look its a 91/38. Which really means its a 91/59 built by someone else.
