Thanks RGRWJB.
I have 4 91's, one unalterd, 'cept the higher Finn front sight and SA, one Tikka 41 redux, an M-24 with a stepped Bolar sthal(sp?) and an M-24 that has the barrel blank, 'cept Sn# 15,001, though it looks scrubbed,( Looking at the scratches, shades of bluing, ect in the light) my P-27marked but still no SA or "D". There might be a "C" on its side, or its a Crylic letter? Faint anyway. Only one was "Shiney New",as we say, it was the Tikka, and the other three were sold as "Missing parts" like a screw on the rear sight or a band retaining wood screw or something I couldnt figure was missing....claening rod were there, and one had a 91 bayonet "But" they did have near smooth bores as the grease you describe was doing its job and the grooves were filled. One hell of a scrub job later, we ended up mildly heating the dismounted action/barrel with a funnel and LOTS o'boiling water and blasting an air hose down them...it came out in thin strips and black puddles. It was in the action too, where the lugs were. We really sludged up one by dripping that crap INTO the action....ONCE. ~LOL!!~ The worst yet was an M-28 with a two pice stock, the rear half having done duty beating Reds to death, pounding ice off steps, chewed by rodents and black as old oils could make it, and was fitted with a near new front end....I always wondered who chose the wood for those jobs...LOL! I gave up scrubbing it , after a couple trys, and left it like that. When we moved, I inspected them, cleaned and dusted, got them gunsocked, and boxed em all after a good scrub and a vasiline wipe down, I actually just Banzi ( Win or die attack...)scrubbed it with gasoline and the third try was the charm.....I promptly smiled and re coated it with Vasiline....Hahahahahahaha!
They all came out rather nice, and I used a solvent with a bronze brush to finnish up.....lots a work, but Im glad they were arsenaled that way, for Us today!
