OK...I finally bought one that I can take to the range.
Here are some pictures of the 1943 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant M91/30 PU sniper I bought a couple of weeks ago in Germany.
It has been refurbished, but it wasn't done very nicely.
The person who who lacquered the wood also lacquered some of the metal parts.
Because of this I could talk the price down a bit.
The bore is nice and shiny and rifling is strong.
The rifle is all matching except for the bolt handle.
I have my doubts about some of the other numbers, but that's OK with me.
After I have found the right load I will take the rifle apart and start cleaning the metal parts that were lacquered.

I'll get back on the ammo in the reloading forum, but just for your info........this is what I reloaded:

S&B cases trimmed back to 53.45mm
S&B LR primers
Different loads of VihtaVuori N110 (reduced loads) starting with 27.2gn up to 28gn.
Prvi Partizan 182 gn cal .311 FMJBT bullet.


I'm not sure what to do with the wood.
It looks good.
Only the hand guard has some scratches.
I think I'll leave it for now.

I see the varnish was applied with vigor! Not a big problem - it will just take time to remove it & get the rifle looking the way you want.

If the following components are available to you, this load shot very well from a Tikka M91/30 that Mario now owns.

Privi cases - Hornady 150 grain .312" diameter bullets - 43.0 grains of Varget powder. Seat bullet to an overall length of 2.825" I used a flat base bullet and not a boat tail.

I think you are right about the varnish.

I always use VihtaVuori powder so I checked a couple of Dutch sites about the availability of Varget.
I can buy it over here, but it is a bit more expensive compared to the VihtaVuori powder.
1 lb of Varget costs EURO 43.90...that's about $53.00.
1 kilogram (2.2lb) of VihtaVuori N-110 costs EURO 62.50...that's about $75.00.
So.....I think I'll stick to the VihtaVuori powder.
I'll just keep trying different loads until I have the right cartridge.
Got some Hornady FB bullets in cal .312 lying upstairs that I might try.
