Found this today and gave it a new home. Has the Mum and matching numbers. The bayonet I think is a Toyoda Jidoshoki Seisakusho. It has a metal butt plate which I have not seen before on this type.

I also found a US Army pamphlet from 1975 that shows how to use small arms against aircraft. Maybe the wing sights on the type 99 were not that off base.

Italy experimented with anti aircraft sights in WW1. The sight clamped over the nosecap of a long rifle. You would need a PhD in geometry to do any good with it, I think. Actually, hitting an aircraft at speed would be quite a trick with any infantry equipment.

The one shown here is mine & a repro a friend in Italy swapped me for books. SW

The manual stated volume of fire was important. I guess it gives you something to do.

i find this fascinating , i grew up in the home of a B29 gunner that described training as shotguns offf the back of a moving pickup against towed targets , they recruited pheasant hunters and duck hunters from the midwest , have to think they thought well in those days given the technology and attributes , today they would be looking for gamers and hackers me thinks ,
