That's a odd trainer for sure, there must have been a special made hand guard to fit it with that angle cut of the rear sight the way it is.

The receiver mark is of "Nippon Special Steel" co.

Reference is 'Military Rifles of Japan" by Honeycutt and Anthony.

A training rifle, not meant to be fired with live ammo, Blanks ONLY!

Buy the book, lots of info and will save you a bundle of $$$.

I did not read all of the post, but the receiver logo is "Nippon Special Steel" if no one IDed it. Did not notice if it had one or two gas holes below the logo, if one it's a copy of the 99 long rifle, two a 38.

Trainers are very cool, neat additions to a gun collection and some really cool varients in their own right, also their cheap yet so A guy can find some of the cool ones for a reasonable price.Over looking a symbol once in a while isnt bad, I once forgot a entire dynasty in the middle of a post, tho several of my "friends" reminded me ,and pointed out my ignorance quite well, lol.

Chip Goddard, (CT) is deeply into a book on Japanese training rifles, he's even gone to the "U.S. Copyright Bureau"(or whatever it's termed) looking up Japanese copyrights on trainers. Seems every thing the Japanese did prior to 12/7/41 was copyrighted over here. His book will be a classic and will push trainer prices through the roof.
