interesting , whether nit picking or not , i like to get exposed to this kind of thing , it makes the area of collecting a bit more meaty , im not into very many areas in depth so its interesting to read a deep post in an area i know nothing about from time to time , it keeps me aware of the vast areas this hobby can cover and how small my area of interest is

Gargoyle, how about saying it is a rifle with no series markings or a pre-series rifle?
I also enjoy picking nits. I was employed for several years picking very small nits, soil round worms, C. elegans for a Bio. lab at the Jet Propulsion Lab in La Canada, Ca., part of a "Worms in Space" project, studying the affects of weightlessness and radiation on worm reproduction and gene mutation. We used 10-40X microscopes to identify and count them.
Chuck.

Rifles made in series are said to be 100,000 per series. Yet all I have ever seen start with "1" and end with "99,999" - looks to me like that is "1" short of 100,000.

Roy, wasn't there a recent post on GB of an Arisaka rifle with a serial # 0?
Maybe it was a pistol, or maybe a bayonet. My ROM is getting pretty slow, or maybe it is just full.

I was reading the other day and if I remember right the author said all series started with a Zero and someone reported seeing one so numbered. The lowest number I have ever had was a "3" and I sold it to someone who wanted it more than I did. If this is true then there were just as many zero serial number out there as any other number unless you take into consideration not all series were completed. You learn something every day.
