Couldn't resist this when I saw it. It's a tread link from a T-97 Tankette. Makes a great doorstop and conversation piece. I later found out that an example of the kind of vehicle it came from was less than 50 miles away in San Luis Obispo. Rode the Harley up there to see it & shot these photos. The barrel is totally bogus - just a piece of pipe. This tankette had a short barreled 37mm gun. Too bad it's sitting outside. The interior is pretty well thrashed, still it has restoration potential.

Would be nice if I had something off this tank. This is my Dad on Saipan in 1944. Note the skull on the engine cover. There is a color photo of this very tank in a wartime issue of National Geographic.

Wouldn't that be cool? Be fun to take it for a spin around the neighborhood, hell - I might even scare all the "illegals" away! Of course I might have to modify the hatch to be able to get my fat ass in it! :oops:

Actually the Ho-Ro was built on the Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tank... I believe the Type 97 tankette was a Te-Ke, though there were different versions. The Type 97 Chi-Ha was eventually upgunned to created the Shinhoto Chi-Ha.

Adogs,
I have been in contact with a fellow from the islands. He restored aT97 tankette and his friend has 15 or so T95 medium tanks parked on his property...just as the Japanese left them. One of them is a comander's tank with several rows of smoke grenade launchers on the turret, for smoke screening. He sent me pictures of inside the T95s turren and there are full containers of magazines for the tank's mg.

A few years ago I picked up this War Dept. publication on Japanese tanks. A scarce booklet & it has a nice photo showing the T-97 Tankette.
