Not so well know as the T38, this Japanese Type I was made for Japan by the Italians on the Carcano action with T38 style under parts and sights. This one is ser. no. A9352. Only know variation is some will be found with the butt stock 1" shorter than others. riceone.

These are sometimes seen missing the floorplate & follower. Will a Type 38 floorplate work? SW

Nice one - I've got an "I" series one - need to pull it back out and take pictures...

Were these made to Japanese specs or they off the shelf Italian rifles. A lot of it looks as if it was made by the Japanese. I've wondered why the Japanese found it necessary to outsource rifles. Wasn't T38 production putting out an awful lot of guns at this time? Guess I need to check my MRoJ and see just when these were bought. How strong is the receiver with no bridge behind the locking point? I guess it was strong enough to get the job done! Nice rifle Roy!

Roy,

Most will be dated underneath the receiver. 38 or 39 only.

Mussolini only sold Japan a token amount of rifles for a political showing as Italy was just as short of rifles - maybe worse. He was always hitting on adoph for equipment but got little. I have some pics of Stukas with Italian markings and a He-111 German bomber with an Italian unit marking but German crosses.

I have a pic of Italian marines equipped with Mauser rifles, but it's in my other computey which seems to have migrated to preppy daughter's house.

A lot of political smoke & mirrors in those days. SW

Neb, Nothing on the bottom of my rifle except "FAT" on bottom of barrel chamber. Blue under the wood is perfect. riceone

Not ALL have the date, but that is when they were made.

Odd it's marked FAT = Fabrica d'Armi Terni. I did not think Terni made any of these. Just Gardone, Brescia & Beretta. SW

Still alot of grey area on these rifles. 1937,38 and 39 was also the time when the japanese (particuarly the navy) were getting VZ24s, from who knows where and ordered 20,000 K98ks from germany. Though no HARD evidence exists, that I am aware of, that any k98ks were found used or even delivered. Numbers of type I rifles produced has been fuzzied over the years. 60k was the old figure. These days the estimate is 120k, based on the observations that prefixes have been A through L and appear to run up to 10k for each letter. Charts have been put out stating that certain letter blocks were made by certain Italian arms makers, but I am not sure what it is based on or how accurate it is. I had also heard of only the 3 makers, so adding Terni muddies the waters on that topic
