the differnece between a training rifle and a real one?

I found a T38 at a gun show today, it was in pretty good shape, no cleaing rod, ground mum, the bore was pretty skinny, so I would assume, safely with no ammo around, that it was a 6.5. After reading waht you guys talk about, I remembered the training rifles, and thought I would wait. This guy is at every show and he doesn't move guns all that fast.
The price seemed ok at 275, the side of the reciever had what looked like a tipped over 4, open at the top, inside a circle, I was going to go back for the serial number but got sidetracked. And the 3 circles intertwined. I didn't look to see if the bolt matched

Any help/info would be greatly appreciated, I might buy it next time I see him

Thanks for your time and input :D

thank you very much for your help. The bore had so much dust in it, I couldn't see anything lol. Now I might have to leave work early again and go take a second look at it :D

...oh there's another layer than that too...

There are rifles (that are presumably safe to shoot) that were TRANSFERED to schools, and then there's the purpose built trainers. Most type 38's are going to be safe to shoot as long as they have a rifled barrel and are in good shape. The trainers have different inspection an arsenal marks, and different serial number blocks

easy there pete! the trainers are a little confusing when you start out, but they're really not too hard to figure out once you dive in.
if you want a decent shooter t38 and aren't in a hurry, i'll sell ya one next time i get home. i've upgraded several of them, so i'll have some fairly nice specimens i can pass on. course, they just bid 8 more months work up here, so we might have to meet up at the jackson shoot or something! y'all have a good day, Keith

stinkpotpete,
while you are looking, buy the book, Military Rifles of Japane, it will help you know what you are looking at and for. It is also a great read.

I took a real close look at the rifle today, first the front barrel band fell off
then when I was looking at the hand guard, I found it would slide back and forth on the barrel. The bolt matched the serial number, and the finish was nice, but too much of the furniture was loose.

Another gunshow tomorrow, I'll keep looking
