Also known as "Substitute Rifle Using Type 35 Action" - these were true Japanese "Last Ditch" rifles. They were made from Type 35 actions with 6.5mm barrels. Many of the Type 35 actions were from the 1902-04 perios and didn't have dustcover grooves. The barrels were either reject Type 38 rejects or other 6.5mm barrels (including machine gun barrels).

You can find more information on P152 of Military Rifles of Japan (5th Ed) and p. 86 of The Early Arisakas

A couple of side views - overall the rifle looks very much like a Type 38, but the stock is a single-piece stock from a trainer.

Here you can see the top of the action showing the 3 - 10 - 5 - Year - Type marking as well as the undefaced mum. This rifle was issued without a serial number, which was common for these rifles.

Next steps will be getting all the vital data off of it...

My reply ended up as a new post. Finger you are making me jealous!! That is a beautiful stock. Wood stock are beautiful to me, thats why I never owned or wanted a composit or plastic stock. Don't even care for a liminated. Nothing binding about this statement just my preference. riceone.

That's one of the things that attracted me to this one as well - never seen a nicer stock on one of these... and overall the blue is great too...
