This isn't a rifle, but might be of some interest. I took these two pictures of a cannon in front of the library in my mother's home town of Woodbine, Iowa. I saw it sitting there, and since I didn't recognize it, decided to go over and take a look. There is no sign on it to identify its origin, just a sign that tells who restored and donated it.

A look at the markings on the breechblock told me it was Japanese. I have tentatively identified it as a Japanese 75mm Model 90 Army howitzer. You sure could tell me different if you know anything about these, which I do not. I took my ID from a picture of a Tomiya plastic model that I found online.

Why this goofy thing is displayed in front of a public library, I don't know. US equipment on display around the flagpole is pretty common to celebrate military service and glorious victories. Displays of enemy equipment as war trophies is more of a German tradition, not a US one, but what the heck, this thing was interesting just the same.

i supose the owner had to get it out of his lawn ? why not donate it to the city ?

What little I've read about these guns is that the Japanese Army had several 75mm's in their inventory of various vintages. They adopted a generic round that could be fired in all of them, so some of them were a little under potential compared to others. The Japanese 75mm round was a pretty long one, reminding me a bit of a .38-55 cartridge.

We like to keep artillery like this around here in Iowa for when our corn-fed deer get too thick :lol

Woodbine eh? That's WAY out in Western Iowa :!:

What ya got there is the Type 95 (1935) 75mm gun. It was produced at Osaka Arsenal in Showa 17 (1942)
Nice one!

Model 95 sounds good to me. Like I said, my identification of the piece as a Model 90 was tentative. I was hoping that someone else here would know more about it than I do. It's interesting that they were making these wooden-wheel jobs in 1942. I suppose that the wood and iron wheel has certain advantages unter certain conditions, but high-speed mobility isn't one of them.

i dont think they were as advanced in many things as we were at that time , but they had equiped themselves for the task as they saw it and we had been playing hide your head in the sand ,

even as they poised themselves we looked around like we couldnt see them , and based on our experience at pearl harbor we hadnt taken them seriously ,

that could do a lot of damage in trained hands today - particularly against some of our facilities that are unprotected

This big boy is what I want in my yard!
You can see that the Type 1 47mm anti tank gun is of a more modern design.
