I am wondering if the metal parts of my rifle are blued or if they was painted black. Can you look at the pictures in this thread that I posted several months ago, and tell me if you think it was painted black or if the metal is simply blued.
The reason I ask is that i want to paint the front sight blade a bright color to make it easier to see the front site when aiming the rifle against a dark background. If this is original rifle bluing, I don't want to screw with it, but if it was painted black, I will go ahead. My grandfather brought this back from the war in the Pacific, and I have been told by a gunsmith that Navy guys often painted the metal black to avoid rust on the way home. My grandfather is now in Heaven so I can't ask him (yet).

Go ahead and paint your sight if you want to, it won't hurt the blue.

What I see is blue, little paint on front sight will come off if you want it off. Nice rifle, wish someone had left me one. riceone.

From the grooves on the reciever, just the peep sight, and the welded safety it looks to be of late war construction also. Nice.
I didn't really have anything constructive to say so I thought I'd ramble on the obvious...
Take care of it and might I offer, look for another so it's not lonely.
