thanks neil you have confirmed my oppinion that this rifle is worth a second if not a third look before abandonment , these rare ones are not easily given over by me - but then i love them all

That is a No.4 that was part of the Century buy from Turkey. They received a lot of No.4's from Britain. You can tell it by the stacking bar seen near the muzzle - it's unique to the Turkish rifles.

Unique as in Turkey was the only country to have them. Not factory original

yup Et2ss clarified it - unique as in only country - but not rare following Century's recent import

its part of her history but not from her origins , making the added bit worthy of preservation , once put on i would leave it and admit it to be 'not original' but very 'legitamate' JMHO

these served all over the globe , some indications are easy and readily accepted by the collecting community , some will be when they become rare , and some are difficult to ID but equally disdaned for now - time will tell if that changes ,

they aint makin them anymore

ive gotta add here my admiration for what the british empire gave the globe - i know there are things to disdane , but all societies have that once they succede and many that failed have as well ,

these rifles [all of them] represent a very influential element of what i look at as a very successful society , time will tell if my heirs agree , but ive decided this IS my focus till they get them ,

im selling off many elements of my US collection at this time , but i wont part with my commonwealth till forced to ,.

i know its one of those that i was considering when i mentioned collector disdain , its not what i want on my brit/ausie/canuk rifles but - on that one i might havce that went thru india i could learn to accept it i think ,

i gave most of my ishy collection to a friends son , i sold a couple , they were good representations - with bayos , but im not thinking on going that route today anyway for what ever expansion i might look too , my inclination is hard to find trainers and a mkVI ,

i have thought to add a mkI/2 & I/3 as well , we shall see ,

now that ive mooved a few of the US collection its getting easier , like after my first kid got married - not really gone , just relocated , i know where they are and how well taken care of , now just need to keep going ....

Didn't Turkey convert theirs to 8mm?

Ah, the infamous "Enfauser" Those were done in the 30's under their standardization program. The one that Mac has is a much later acquisition.

I doubt you will get much of a reply. They are just wholesale importers. Whoever opens the mail probably won't even know what an enfield is. At best they might match the serial number with the date they imported it.

They were sent to Turkey by England post war as part of a lend lease deal. The turks put the stacking hook on them. Nothing rare, just unique to the turk enfields.
The ottomans had contracts with Mauser for their rifles. Most were converted to 8mm after the fall of the ottomans. A few captured enfields were also converted to 8mm with mauser barrels AKA the 'enfauser' during this time. These while not the safest of rifles are a bit rare and collectible and will garner a fair bit of $. The one you have was made in england, at best rebarreled & parts swapped around by the turks.

That is all.

all of what he said , and unfortunately i agree on what the importer could possibly contribute to your knowledge - even if they were so inclined

I doubt they did but you never know. You can always look for a crescent marking but I think they stopped doing those after the last mauser rebuilds in the 50's. I would leave the hook on as part of it's history. I'd be happy with that & shoot the heck out of it
