I know there is not to many French rifle folks here BUT!! Here is my pre WW2 (I think) Mas 36, Serial number 282 with no letter prefix. I have not taken this apart to see if there is a barrel date. Still in the black paint and walnut wood. 
I have an all matching 1940 (cartouche) Dated rifle (serial #M? 33672) still in paint finish. 
Just wanted to share! Neither one has any import markings. |

beautiful , ive seen duanes up close but his is the only one [i will add he has a very nice one] ive never seen one localy , but that doesnt mean there are none , nice catches

Almost all the ones I have seen are the parked after war ones. One of these days I need to find one for the set. I have another painted finish one on the way here with a 1939 dated cartouche for the collection. Unfortunately its on a slow boat (UPS ground) to my house and i think the stock has been slightly sanded.

On the lower rifle in the first post I pulled the rifle out and the cartouche is faded but looks to be 1945, then I had a brain storm as to how to get the hand guards off with out the spanner wrench (used heavy duty snap ring pliers) and the barrel is dated 1945 so that answered that question. |

Unfortunately I just placed another L (1945-6) series matching with orig paint finish on layaway! 250.00 and could not pass it up!!

You certainly know where to find em! Do you happen to know of the prefixes for years of production? The only thing I can find on line is for the 36-51 over at surplusrifleforum.com and I was looking for prefixes for 36 through the war. Anything you've got would be greatly appreciated. |

Gatsby I think I got this info from the old ezboard days, I'm not sure how accurate it is but it's a start. I'm still learning about these rifles. As you can see below the rifle I sent you the info on should be a 1945 built rifle. The real way would be to take off the hand guards and look at the barrel date. Although I have one rifle that serial number is a newer date then what the barrel saws so who knows. MAS 1936 7.5... Serial number prefixes F, G, H, J, K, and L up to 45XX were all pre-war made. In 1945, the French restarted where they left off in June of 1940 ... L4600, the rest of the L series were manufactured in either 1945 or 1946. M, N, P,and Q were finished off by 1950. They then went to block letters: FG, FH, and FJ and so on until 1957 |

I'm itchin for one. All I have left to complete my collection of WWII rifles is a MAS-36 and a Garand. At least that is for the major players. |

so am i correct in thinking that funky knob thing protruding below the barrel is the bayonet inserted backwards ? kind of a plug type arrangement ?

Yes thats the bayonet. It pulls out and you flip it around and you have a nice little pig sticker. Now how strong it really was is hard to tell and I'm not going to test one of mine but it does not look as menicing as a blade bayonet would:?
