Rifle Scope
Model 1953 For Semiautomatic Rifles

Mles 1949 and 1949-56

Technical Summary Guide

Edition No. 1
Date of Edition: 1959

General Characteristics

Article I. - Intent.

Riflescope A.P.X. L 806 can be currently assembled on rifles SA mle 49 and mle 49-56 (1).

It is intended for the aimed fire on small-size or targets invisible to the naked eye.

Suitably mounted, regulated and used, it makes it possible to reach:

Almost undoubtedly: a helmet or a head at 200m: a man laid down at 400m.

With a strong probability: a man kneeling or upright at 600m.

It will be assembled preferably on rifle mle 49-56.

It also constitutes (apart from the infra-red devices of shooting) the best means of locating and initiating combat on targets in poor visibility (twilight, clear night).

Article II. - Numerical Information.

Magnification: 3.85
Length without eyecup: 159mm
Weight with mount: 495g.

Chapter 1

Description

Single Article – Important parts (fig. 1)

Body of scope.
Base of scope (allowing the use of the fixed sights of the weapon up to elevation setting 400m).
Attachment slide.
Tightening lever of the scope mount. Tightening of the mount to the rifle can be modified by operating the indented screw, which is used as axis for the lever.
Clamps of the scope body.
Range adjustment; graduated in 50m increments from 50m to 800m.
Side crown graduated for the elevation adjustment.
Lid with the three latch-tightening, adjusting device screws for elevation,
Adjusting knob for windage under its protective cap.
Eyecup.
Special key.

Chapter II

Use of the Rifle Scope

Article 1. - Basic Concepts.

Rifles intended to receive scopes must be selected beforehand by shooting for their good accuracy and (if possible) the softness of the trigger.
Rifles selected should not be used for shooting grenades.
Scopes must be assigned to a rifle.
The assignment of a scope to a rifle cannot be made randomly; it is necessary that it follow the normal adjustment of the scope (article 3)
Once the rifle-scope pair is formed, it must be regarded as final and assigned a qualified gunner to be responsible for it.
The gunner must receive proper technical and tactical instruction.
The rifle with telescopic sight < <foolproof> > does not exist.

Article 2. - Assembly of the scope on rifle

Check that the scope body does not play in its clamps. If so, correct its position and lock the screws of the collar.

To mount the scope on the weapon:

Bring the tightening lever to the rear position.
Engage the attachment slide of the scope mount in its housing on the left side of the receiver while operating as it is indicated in figure 2, push until seated.
Fold the tightening lever forwards.

A. - Possible Difficulties.

The lever cannot be folded forwards.
The scope still exhibits play on rifle, the lever being in the front extreme position.

Footnote - This manner of presenting the scope makes it possible to see the end of the slides, and to avoid fumbling about.

B. - Remedies

Remove scope.
Loosen (1st case) or to tighten (2nd case), by fractions of turn, the screw being used as axis for the lever (fig. 3).

The operation is finished when the scope forms a rigid block with rifle once the lever has been moved to its front extreme position; the risks of maladjustment from shock are then very reduced and the risks of accidental loss of the scope removed.

Notice - If the play could not be completely removed while proceeding as above, test the scope on another rifle. If this fails, send the scope in for repair.

If the scope base could not be started on the weapon, proceed in a similar way.

C. - Play take-up of the scope mount.

Bring the tightening lever to the rear.
Using a punch, depress the locking stud of the screw of the tightening lever.
Operate the screw by fractions (1/6) of a turn.

Attention – Do not use the special key for this operation.

Article 3. - Adjustment of the scope

A. - Examination of the possibility of the adjustment.

Correctly mount the scope on a rifle whose fixed sights will have been regulated beforehand.
Bring back < <to> > adjusting devices of the scope: red mark of the adjustment knob in direction opposite the reference mark of the base plate - middle of the sector graduated opposite the reference mark located on the edge of the knurled part (paragraphs C and D).
Place the weapon provided with its scope on a stable support (if possible a rest).
Place a target at 200m.
Bring the fixed sights of the weapon (range 200) on the target, either by aiming of the weapon, or by moving the target.
Set the graduation to <2> on the range drum of the scope.
Operate the drums of adjustment of the scope (windage, then elevation) (paragraphs C and D) so as to carry out the coincidence of the aiming by scope and the by fixed sights.

If this coincidence can be carried out while using:

In windage, two graduations on either side of the red mark.
In elevation, three graduations on either side of the middle of the graduated sector

The rifle-scope pairing can be retained

If this coincidence cannot be carried out within the limits above:

Start the operations again on another rifle.

If no rifle is appropriate, with the direction indicated above, to entrust the rifle-scope pairing presenting the least variation to the Establishment of Fastening of the Service of the Material nearest.

B. - Adjustment Process (concrete case, by E)

The purpose of this adjustment is to ensure the effective coincidence of the shooting and the aiming by scope.

It is the responsibility of the gunner and must be checked and, if need be, be carried out each time necessary.

It is carried out in the following way:

Place one self if possible at 200m, if not, 100m, of a target provided with visual (with the target need for circumstance).
Post on the range drum of the scope the graduation corresponding to the distance.
Shoot 3 test cartridges to give an average point of impact.
Measure the difference in windage and elevation between this average point and the center of the target.
Convert these variations (direction and size) into graduations of correction
Carry out the corrections
Check by shooting another 3 cartridges. The adjustment is good if the variations are less-than or equal-to 0.25 thousandth (5cm at 200m).

C. - Adjustment in Windage (fig. 4).

1 graduation of the adjustment knob is worth approximately 0.7 thousandths, that is to say:

7cm at 100m,
14cm at 200m.

1 notch makes a half graduation, that is to say:

3.5cm at 100m,
7cm at 200m.

If the shooting is to the left of the point concerned: turn the button clockwise (concrete case fig. 4).

If the shooting is to the right: turn the button counter-clockwise.

Significant Remark
All operations other than those indicated above are prohibited. (In particular, the direct action on the cam of adjustment using a screwdriver destroys the fixity of the reticle).

D. - Elevation Adjustment (fig. 5).

1 side graduation of the crown is worth 0.5 thousandths for range 2, that is to say:

5cm with 100m,
10cm with 100m,

If the shooting is above the point concerned:
Turn the crown forwards using the special key (concrete case fig. 5).

If the shooting is below:
Turn the crown backwards.

Operations to be carried out:

Loosen, with the special key, the three side screws of the lid.
Engage the key in the notches of the crown as indicated above.
Turn the crown in the direction and of the quantity suitable, by maintaining (with the left hand) the range posted.
Replace the three side screws of the lid.

Significant Remark:
All operations other than those indicated above are prohibited.

E. - Concrete Case of Adjustment

Distance shooting: 200m

=: Impacts
+ : Average Point (P.M.)

Variation in direction: x=33 cm on the left of the center of the visual
Variation in height: y=11cm above the center of the visual one

Adjustment in Windage:

Take off the protective cap of the adjustment knob.
Direction: the shooting is to the left; turn the button clockwise. (Direction of the arrow, fig. 4)
Quantity: to correct of two graduations and half, is with 200m: 2 X 4 + 7 = 35cm
Replace the protective cap.

Elevation Adjustment

The posted range is 2 (200m); maintain for the duration of the adjustment.
Loosen the three side screws of the lid using the special key
Turn the key:
Direction: forwards (direction of the arrow, fig. 5)
Quantity: Move the crown of 1 graduation compared to the reference mark located on the edge of the knurled part.
Tighten the three screws of the lid.

Article 4. - Maladjustments

A. - Displacement, in the course of shooting, of the reticle of the scope: the scope must be sent in repair.
B. - Maladjustments which had with a displacement of the scope compared to rifle.

If the fitting of the mount on rifle were suitably carried out, the significant maladjustments; it will be the same for the majority of the shocks as it will however be necessary to avoid as much as possible.

The variations in temperature or hygrometrical state can lead to significant maladjustments; scopes regulated for a rifle in the shade and in a fresh place, cannot be regarded any more as such after an exposure of the material during a few hours to the sun.
An excessive heating of the weapon by the shooting can lead to the same results.

C. - Changes caused by a variation of the trajectory of the ball.

A practical case is that which results from a significant variation of altitude between the moment of the adjustment and that of employment (operations in mountainous zone). It will be necessary to carry out either a new elevation adjustment, or to use a lower range setting.

It remains that the adjustment of the optics on a rifle must be frequently checked (and if necessary corrected) by the gunner.

The concern that exists, in any circumstance, is that perfectly regulated scopes and the aptitude to reach that point quickly must constitute the A.B.Cs of the instruction of the marksman.
