I have to disagree. The vast majority of the 8mm conversions were made in the early 1950s. The majority used rebored barrels. A writer in Europe mentions new-made barrels, but since these were assembled by speculators who were hoping for maximum profit, I believe the new-made 8mm barrels to be very much in the minority.

A FEW 8mm conversions were made during the war. Not many - it was an experiment by Terni. Heinrich Kreighoff made a few thousand up - also as an experiment.

How do we know these were experimental? No clips. The Kreighoff conversions were made with a wooden block which made the rifle a single shot. The post war conversions were never used as offensive weapons - the majority were sold to Egypt, Syria and the UAR for use as trainers.

The wartime Terni conversions? Strictly an experiment. Which does not seem to have panned out as no more were made. One of the arsenals made up a FEW M41s in 8mm Breda ( which I thought was a really good idea) but that's not apples and apples.

Are rebored barrels inherently dangerous? I'm having a hard time with that one, too. It's the same steel, and the Italian arsenals were picky about their steel. We know this from the steel supplier being marked on the rifles. We can't make a blanket statement - all 8mm conversions are inherently good or bad. As with any other old rifle, each must be assessed on its own merits. Check headspace & bore diameter then use the milder American 8mm ammo if concerns remain. That or 8mm cast bullet loads.

Long story short, new Carcanos were no longer made after mid/late 1943... 8mm or otherwise. The 8mm conversions were just a post-war speculation scheme to profit from leftover parts. SW

I think the whole bad rap for Carcanos came in 2 parts.

1) it was used in the JFK assassination
2) proper diameter boolits weren't available for reloaders & undersized bullets yield sorry results.

I don't think anyone has ever "Blown Up" a Carcano in real life......I think they are internet myths.

i know nothink , but ....if we were to outlaw every firearm that killed a person we might loose them all , however if we eliminate those behind the weapon that break the law we all live more peacefully with our weapons ,

i appreciate the thought , but its the person - not the gun - that breaks the law and commits the crime

There are far too many people,and I use that word loosely, in this country that want to blame the inanimate object and they reside mostly on both coasts.

as you so aptly point out HerMesser , they do love to shift the blame , i think it inherent in their point of view - they dont wish to be accountable for anything they do or say so they blame the inanimate and those of us that do believe in personal responsibility ,

its why our prisons are full , why there is so much fuss at the execution of a heinous criminal , and why the execution of the unborn is so widely accepted ,

its also why history must be rewritten and they want us to apoligize for our mere existence ,

its all BS
