I've always wondered why LHO chose a Carcano. I mean, with his self-styled communist outlook, I would have seen him using a Mosin-Nagant of one model or another.

My only guess relates to his financial status. Seems he had quite a volatile personality and went bonkers at the slightest excuse. Which didn't do much for long term employment. It works out that way if you get into screeching contests with the boss. Fist fights are right out, too.

With a Russian wifey and baby to support on darn little money, his frustration grew. I think the Carcano was the cheepest scoped rifle he was able to find.

It gave the Italian rifle collecting community a black eye from which we are just recovering after all these years.

i had always thought it was an opportunity aquisition , just happened upon it and grabbed it up , but , it may well have been provided to him if the conspiracy folks are to be beleived at all ,

there was no problem in those days getting one - i walked into the hardware store and plunked down my cash and walked out with rifle on shoulder at about that date , no-one even questioned a kid buying and i bought ammo at the same purchase , just stuck them in my pocket
