Here's a very nice M91TS with a bore in NRA bad condition. Maybe not an outright sewer pipe, but badly worn and pitted. Which is consistent with my police issue gun theory.
After the war, police departments were issued M91TS with bad bore to be used as tear gas grenade launchers. The grenade cup clamped around the front sight. Bad bores were no problem in this application since only launching blanks would be fired.
No wear marks around the front sight means it was never used - it just took up space on a rack.
Looking the rack number over closely, it was clearly applied by brush with a stencil. It hasn't been parkerized like other post war police carbines I've seen, but could have been racked right away when received from the army and forgotten.
Other than that, beech handguard - walnut stock - all marked parts have the tiny BL Brescia arsenal identifier - it has a bayonet lug for the standard M91 bayonet, but that part can be changed out by removing one screw. A 3 minute job. That could also play into the police angle, but nothing is chiseled in stone that way.
I'm prepared to believe this is in fact a police gun. Some department got... less than 100 TS for grenade launching. There was only so much need for that sort of thing, so the gun languished on a rack for a lot of years. No import mark so no clues how it got here. SW
