I have some questions about my M38 short rifles. The first one is serial number Q50. SA marked. It has 2 dates on it 1896 and 1939 XVII. It also has marked on it PO or PD not sure which. And on the top next to the receiver a 7. Am I safe to assume that the barrel is a cut down from another rifle from 1896 and rebored? What is the PO or PD stamp?

On my other M38 Short, a 1938 Terni, its little boring as all it has that I want to ask about is the crossed rifles (accuracy marking?), would this be a marking from a reused barrel also or were they marking the M38's during this time period?

Yes M91 long rifle barreles were recycled and used for the 7.35 caliber. I have one that has the old Terni 1895 date and serial number still visible.

The PO stamp is the barrel steel code that ID's the barrel blank maker or subcontractor. It also is from the old barrel markings.

Yes the crossed rifle stamp was used on the M38's. There is still discussion as to the meaning if it meant the rifle tested more accurate at the factory than others and could be selected by sharpe shooters to use as sniper rifles or if it meant the tolerances were tighter than other production rifles.

PO is for the Czech foundry at Polte. I believe the other is for the foundry at Skoda. Italy used a lot more Czech steel than is believed.

I also have a double date M38 - double serial numbers, and the Finns gave it a double SA stamp, too. SW
