My three most recent rifle purchases arrived yesterday from the auction house and I'm really pleased at what I got. The Swiss Vetterli has apparently been gently restored. One of the Italian rifles looks similarly clean and restored.

The second Italian rifle looks quite different from the first two, in that no restoration has been done. The stock cartouche is much clearer and easier to read. Even more interesting are two holes in each side of the rifle that I assume were made at the time the rifle was converted to the Vitali magazine, but I can't figure out why. I've never seen another conversion with these same two holes, but I can't think of any other reason why they would be there. Notice the low serial number: KQ8547. Maybe it was early in the game and their conversion process was not fully developed. Experts, any thoughts?

Was it just some Swiss models that used the King loading gate? I guess all of the Italians used a verticle mag so it was not necessary. I don't know much about these. Educate me.
