Here is a question I have not seen pop up. It may have but here it is again. I have seen all kinds of Carcano's most without import markings and others with different types. Now skipping the newer CAI stuff, here is what I have seen and if anyone can date them for me and others that would be great. Please note the fonts as that is the way they look.

MADE in ITALY on barrels aka Navy carbines

MADE IN ITALY on the top of the receiver

MADE in ITALY on the barrel by the serial number/site

MADE ITALY with no "in" like Oswald's rifle on the barrel by the serial number

MADE in ITALY in a circle on the butt end of the stocks

MADE in ITALY cross ways on the butt end of the stocks

MADE ITALY doesn't so much come from a specific era as a specific importer. Not RIVA - it was another, but I can't recall which one now.

The last one I have seen as late as 1968 on an M41 marked "FAET" on the receiver = a Terni refurb.

Some day when you are not otherwise occupied, compare like arsenal rifles to see if similarities exist. I believe ( but can't prove) you will see consistency within specific arsenals that does not extend to others. SW

RIVA was the importer who painted some M91-38s black. Why I have no idea... I guess they thought black rifles were more sinister. SW

Did they actually paint them black or used a really black/dark stain? The M91/38 I have that has the same MADE ITALY as LHO when I took it apart you could see where an almost ebony stain was used on it by the runs into the wood inside the area where the metal is.

I have never actually seen one so it could just be stain. In either case, they were not 'Gaurdie del Duce' rifles. Those were of the highest quality and hand fitted. Mostly cav carbines and Beretta SMGs. SW
