Hi All,
To my shame I have till recently ignored the fascinating subject of Carcanos. A Mod here recomended I stop in over here as some hard core Carcano guys are resident. So here I am. Please pardon my errors as I get myself up to speed on the intimate details of the Carcano world.

A few pics of my new toy....

OK...Now a question...
The pic below is from an auction, and I see that this Carcano has a maker name on the barrel. My 91/38TS does not have a maker name. Since mine is an earlier serial number than the one in the auction, I would think it would also have a maker name. It is my understanding that the maker name was dropped later, so why does my earlier #'d TS not have it ????

Welcome to the fascinating - and frustrating - world of Carcano collecting!

The FNA-B RA and RB series were made late in the war, and many were made up from parts laying around. Like barrels that had "passed the gauge" but had not been completely stamped, for example.

That's my guess for yours, and it's only a guess. Both the German and Italian Carcano books use the word "inconsistent" a lot. There is little chiseled in stone with this model. Generally speaking lack of the maker's mark means later production. The type of wood shown is also consistent with a late rifle - beech was getting very scarce in the final days.

I also believe it narrowly missed being converted to 7.9 caliber.

There is no set date of manufacture for the RA & RB series either... the way I read it, they were made between mid 1943 and early 1945.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but so much of this model is just not known. If you have the action from the stock sometime, look the bottom of the receiver ring over closely - sometimes there will be a date. The later it was made, the less likely it will be there, however.

Oddly, I have one a few thousand off that has the navy "crusader shield" and a tiny anchor.

Since I am such poor help and you are the lucky 100th noob to sign up this year, you are entitled to a free kitten!! You have but to stop by:

#123 South Main St
Haystack, Nebr

and the lovely Rita will present you with a kitten in the color of your choice! As long as this is the color of your choice! ;)

We can't always answer all questions, but it's still a great site!!! SW

Wow

It's nice to see some other TS's that did not get the hack job to 8mm! I have two I think in the same letter block and they could be brothers to yours. Same rough sanding and the look of no oil at all on the beech stocks. Yours is a nice find. I think someplace here is a post on some of my mid to late TS's.

I did a little reading & translating just now while making grub for the work cooler & see that in 1943 - most likely after Crazy Benito & gf got strung up down at the gas station - omitting the maker's mark was not uncommon.

The Italian Carcano book shows a 1943 Gardone cav carbine in the SXxxxx range with only the serial number showing on the barrel. The accompanying text mentions "inconsistent application".

That yours shows 1943 on the receiver bottom is far from common, too. About half of mine lack the bottom receiver date after 1943.

Bottom line? You will see about anything for markings mid-43 onward.

I just got in 2 more cav carbines, and neither fit any standard criteria. I have a 1928 Terni cav carbine (it was "never made") with a serial number that comes back to a 1917 Brescia cav carbine... But it's a Terni receiver dated Apr 1902 on the bottom... Terni made only M91 long rifles on 1902. In a completely different serial number range.

I still feel that there was a mad scramble to produce servicable arms, and marking protocol was thrown out the window in favor of a big pile of completed arms.

This is only a theory and has no basis in reference books. SW
