I got this pic just now - a close friend in Italy found one and it's a fake. He epassed the pic along as a warning.

What you see is a reproduction WW1 Carcano anit-aircraft sight. The geometry is intended for the M91 long rifle. As seen, it just clamps onto the nose cap. Originals came with a detailed instruction sheet showing how to aim at various estimated distances. I assume you would also have to estimate speed.

The real items are very scarce and highly sought after by die-hard collectors. This one is so new, you can almost smell it. But say some shyster buried 5 of them in the back yard & left them for a few months? It would then be a little harder to tell.

I'd buy a repro just to have one for a display, but proceed with caution if you see one of these at auction. I think the first few will sell for big $ to unsuspecting wannabes.

I just heard back from the usual suspects in Italy & it's being offered commercially for 55 USD. Probably plus shipping from Europe.

I think I'll get one just for a display. SW

Maybe if I print it off in OLD paper & advertise it as vintage, I can have the phoney-baloney sight for nuttin! SW

is there enough money in this to fake it ? or are they so hard to find that there are that many that would like one making it a viable product to remake ?

How well does it work. They use the area around me to teach Cessna pilots how to buzz houses.

Military Chanel had the JFK "Magic Bullet" show on today and they were suprized that the little carbine and FMJ bullet would acutally go through 40 somthing inches of pine log. It was interesting even if it seemed that they wanted the test to fail. I had never watched it before.

I've no idea what a real one would bring - never saw or heard of one for sale. Possibly $500 on fleabay.

As far as damage to the aircraft, think how robust the average WW1 biplane was. Like not very. Made of wood and fabric, even a 30-30 could raise heck with stuff.

I feel this item never made mass issue due to the large number of variables involved to get consistent hits with a rifle. Distance? Velocity? Steady rest from which to fire? VERY much easier to use a MG?

By way of flushing out fakes offered as the real deal, the author of the German Carcano book sent a detailed list of thread pitches, screw lengths, sight thickness to .001mm.

Which is too involved to discuss openly. If any of you machinist types really want to know, PM for details.

Oh! This setup took a special rear sight, too!
