Went on a little drive out to a friends Army Navy store and he had this vintage Vietnam era Frank & Warren, Inc. Type IV Survival Ax with a 1967 dated sheath, then I went to my buddy's for dinner and he gave me his Ontario SPAX Tool with FG/UC Sheath that he used in Afghanistan, I do love the mil surp tools!

the Ontario SPAX Tool, a military breaching tool, that features an 8" blade made of 1095 carbon steel, .250" thick. The blade of this Ontario tool has a non reflective black epoxy powder coat and a hole to open and close fire hydrants/gas valves. The SPAX Tool has full length tang construction; ribbed black Kraton handle for secure grip, and a lanyard hole. An FG/UG Digital Camo nylon sheath with leg strap, tie down and webbing on the front to attach small knives and tools is included with this Ontario tool. The Ontario SPAX Tool with FG/UC Sheath has an overall length of 13.125". Proudly made in the USA.

The LC-14-B Woodman's Pal survival axe was originally a tool for forestry or agriculture, but quickly earned a place as an outstanding military implement. The well designed and balanced blade was first procured in World War II. The LC-14-B Woodman's Pal served through the Vietnam War and is still part of the military inventory of edged tools in the 21st Century. Photos of John S. Meyer, One-Zero of RT Idaho show him wearing a Survival Ax,During the Vietnam war, the Woodman's Pal was designated as the Type IV Survival Ax, the main component of the "Tool Kit, Survival, Type IV" issued as NSN 8465-973-4807 under specification MIL-S-8642C. It was issued to air crews, helicopter crews, and for other survival purposes. In addition to the tool itself, the kit included:

* Sharpening stone on chain with instructions
* Burning Glass (magnifying lens) with instructions
* Pouches for the stone and glass
* Nylon tie cord, OD color
* Case

During this time period the tool was manufactured by Frank & Warren, Inc. The blade itself and the case will be so marked. The base of the case had two grommets for tying it to a leg or pack so it will not bounce. Early cases were cotton duck but were changed to nylon like other Army equipment of the Vietnam era.

For aircrew survival, the same tool was issued as the Global Survival Kit, SK-NA-2 Aircrewmans.

Very nice indeed, I have always looked at the ads for those sportsman's pal tools and been interested but to cheap to pull the trigger. Have you used it or is in the collection?

How is the balance on that

Its a veitnam era one so it's in my collection, you can buy modern versions of the same style. the thing is real sharp, cut my finger the first time I had it out.
