Okay, knife people... what is the purpose of this agricultural implement? I found it in the garage this morning & used it for some backyard trimming. (Not the intended use, but it did a great job) A Sq might know this one. SW zQuiz 001 (1024x308).jpg [ 212.05 KiB | Viewed 9696 times ] zQuiz 002 (1024x307).jpg [ 215.27 KiB | Viewed 9696 times ] |

It is probably a coconut trimmer, the pointy thing to pick it up and the blade to whack the end off. Rad |

Wrong, wrong and w-r-o-n-g. It's a sugar beet knife. The earliest beet pullers did only that: pull the beet from the ground. Grunt laborers then came along with these knives. The hook was used to pick the beet up to be held in the off hand. The leafy top of the beet was then amputated and the beet proper was tossed into a wagon. The wagons went to a beet dump to be loaded into rail cars. Then off-a to the sugar factory. The beets were washed, sliced very thin and boiled. The resulting sugar syrup was boiled down into a sweet sludge that was dried, smushed up and either refined into white sugar or left as brown sugar. The beet biz has taken a big hit in the past few decades mostly due to the Hunt Bros failed attempt to corner the silver market. They owned a large sugar company and defaulted heavily on beet growers' contracts in order to pay for their silver trading screw ups. This bankrupted countless farmers and forever stained the credibility of the sugar biz. There's still a sugar factory going not far from Haystack. Smells nice when they are cooking sugar beets! SW |

I had the right idea, just the wrong produce. We used to have a beet processing plant about 35 miles north but it shut down a ling time ago. Rad |

Along with the piggy parts, you put breaded sugar beet slices on the grill. Maybe a few ears of sweet corn if the coons left any. SW |

I live in beet-producing country, but I've never seen an implement like this one. Couldn't even guess that's what it was used for. So today has not been totally wasted, I've learned something ! A |
