I finally got around to taking pics. It's shown here with a shortened one and my Kropatschek bayonet for size comparison. Paid a bit for it, but you just never see the long ones for sale here. At least 700,000 were cut down for the 6.5 Vetts, but I suspect closer to a million were shortened. The amputated portion was used to make fighting knives for units like "Arditi" and "Folgore". These were so popular, dedicated fighting knives were also made, and wouldn't I like to have one of each variety! Bayonets 001 (1024x609).jpg [ 463.01 KiB | Viewed 8692 times ] It mounts on the side of the barrel - probably because of the physiology of the intended target. These folks took bayonet fighting seriously! But that way doesn't photograph well, so I show it underneath the rifle to give an idea of overall length. Also shown is my Kropatschek in the same way. It's the longest rifle/bayonet combo I have other than the Vetterli. I've a long French bayonet, but it's for a cav carbine. Maybe a Berthier or Lebel might be as long or longer... a Gew98 with butcher blade? Anyway, I'm glad to say I was never involved in a bayonet fight. unfortunately no it's been shortened. The ring has a diameter of .684, I just checked and it's for the Carcano conversion. It has a TA under crown marking just above the crossguard |

I have one of those, don't see what all of the fuss is about! Just kidding. Seriously, I got the bayonet first then had to search for a weapon the put it on. I settled for this one. Actually, both are in fantastic shape, way better than these photos show! The little TS rifle shoots quite well also, for those interested in such things. This is my first post on this forum being that I recently stumbled over here. What a great forum, I look forward to visiting regularly. |
