So many things to look at, so many people to work around, but I found a few things, and Asquare bought stuff vicariously



Top is a 1899 Swiss, bottom is a Norwegian M4 bayo for M-1 carbine.

This I got off fleabay, paid lots less than ones I saw at show. Garand M10, U C marked, dated 1943, scabbard is Danish marked F K F, dated 1955. Asquare, I'm thinking maybe it's a Danish thing with the pointy blades, this one is ground to a point like that cut down one we saw. The scabbard is fiberglass and painted, not wood looking like the german ones.

Wish I could have gotten up to it! There did happen to be a gunshow down in Iowa City out at Sharpless Auctions. Did manage to get out to it.

Found a nice 1934 Tula Laminate Stock 91/30 for a friend of mine who only just a few hours earlier had asked me to find a milsurp rifle for him. Show was really pretty small, but its their first time out there, the crowd was a decent size for as small of a room they had.

I did come across a CZ Vz.22 22lrAR Complete Upper for $350. I'd never seen one before and I was sore tempted to pick it up. Talked to Bruce about it though and decided better of it, need to focus on my MilSurp collection

'pete , that M1 you show is not a cutdown - might be ground/sharpened a bit , but , its longer than the cutdown we saw at the show , someone cut that one at the show to a bit more point than yours shows and sharpened the false edge to match the true edge , you did well on the one you got ,

and pete - its dutch , netherlands , martin may take issue with your geography , heres the one i told you i got from him


if you recall the swiss bayo is gripped like the Krag i mentioned that resulted in our krag M1892 , M1905 , M1 , which all fit the M1892 krags thru the M1 garand , thats why you recall the norway connection

What did the itialian carbine bayo run ya? I have been looking for one but can't gauge the prices on them.

Were there any marks on the hilt? anyhing to indicate it is Dutch? I have not seen any at the gun shows around here.

I can't find any marks in this at all. The only difference I see is that this one has pins through the hilt, you can see those in the pics, and the scales a look like bakelight. The scabbard has the german wood look to it. The seller had it marked as being Norwegian, but Asquare was there and he knows alot about US bayos and thier variants. He's kind of like talking to an interactive encyclopedia

His is the other bayo, he got from Holland.

From pics, the 3 main differences I can see are the bakelight scales, the pinned hilt and the wood look scabbard. The US M4 has a leather handle, no pins and the standard fiberglass scabbard.

My bayonet book doesn't list much for Dutch bayos, I'll have to take a look on-line.

I found the reason for the german wood looking scabbards, they whole thing was made in germany for the dutch. The germans made scabbards for the danes, and these had the same wood look. The early Dutch M4s had the scales held in place by rivets, the later models had slotted screws. They also had some that didn't have pinned blades, and these were numbered.
