For 30, I would have grabbed it, too. I am a firm believer it buying items that are only missing a few small parts - they might be found from a parts vendor some day, or a machinist might make them for you at an affordable price.

You see a lot of these... were the longer German bayonets ever cut down into fighting knives? I have two Italian bayonets that have been so converted.

I found one that was in 'dug up' condition. Bought it and an Italian bayonet in similar shape in a group deal = 2 rusty bayonets for one money. ( $12.00) SW

Yep, you can find some cut-down examples.
It is generally assumed that soldiers did that during the war to make trench knives, but imho most of them were done after the war to make hunting knives or tools. You have to remember everything war "recycled" and put to "peacetime" us back then, even uniforms.
Besides, i think back then officers would have frowned upon army issue gear being mutilated in the field ...
If I find some pix I'l post them.

You never know, you might run into a guy that has a butchered butcher, that he got with a Turkish rifle. And that guy might be able to remove the catch. He doesn't know how he would do it with out ruining the nut, or if the Turks used the same catch when they modified it to their use. But, he would be willing to try because the Turks really did a number on this bayonet and it is regulated to tent stake, and stab the weed duty. And it doesn't need a catch for that.
