I ordered a bayo in early Feb and just today it showed up. A Springfield Armory cut down. I was a little worried as to what kind of condition it would be in as some people have written about their less than desireable pieces they received. But when I opened the box it looked pretty darn good to me. Any help with the numbers and what the E-US stands for would be appreciated.

well - thats a super springfield bayo made in 1909 , the serial number works for that i think since they started making them in 1905 , this was originaly fitted with walnut grip scales , they were replaced at an early rearsenal or when cut down , and it originaly had a brite finish so it has been parkerized at cut down i think ,

the cut down happened in about 1943 i think , even though it looked less uniform than utica cutlery did back then - i think it might just be the angle of the photo ,

the scabbard is not a US made - its a foreign made , probably korean ? or japanese ? im guessing here tho , they were made in germany as well i think ,

even tho the bayonet cutdowns were called an M1905E1 , the scabbards were called an M3A1 , so the marking is not related to any US modification [official or otherwise] may well be made by a US mfgr tho for the commercial/foreign market

cheese - i didnt realise you were right here , the more i thought the more i edited , hope you got the added info , if you care ,

congrats on a good buy , and i think your father will be happy with this one - i would be , its a real trooper , perhaps in more wars than we realize , a lot happend between 1909 and now ,

BTW - as an aside , the cuts [indents] where the fiberglass scabbard body meets the metal throat , indicates it was "MADE" that way , as an M7 scabbard , if it were a cutdown M3 these would not be there ..........just a bit of obscure info :<}

Thanks again....this is info I probably never would have figured out on my own as I don't really look for bayonets. I have a few...Swiss, Yugo, M1917 and a repro M4. Someday I may have to get bayos for all my purchases but I have a few rifles yet to get first :wink:

its a disease of coarse - first you need a rifle , then an A$$#ole like me gets you into bayonets , then you need one for every rifle then .........

then you find that bayonet , the one that beckons , it calls to you - and now your buying rifles to go with the blades , trust me on this one - i know :-?
