This is a Mano and Metate grinding stone that I found a good many years ago. |

These are pretty common in campsites around Texas, where they were processing grain's or nuts. I have seen camps where you might find 6 or 7 in one camp. I found both of these pieces in the same hole. The Native Americans here moved around a lot from season to season, so they would bury their grinding stones in a certain area of the camp so they didn't have to carry them from place to place and they would be there when they returned the next season. |

I tried grinding some dried corn we had in the field onetime with one of these. You had more grit and dust than you had corn meal. |

......yeah- I think thats why their teeth were in such bad shape-the grit was mixed in no matter how hard they tried and it wore teeth down... |

needed a gizzard to use that stone to good purpose seriously , it was a hard life , and much shorter than ours , but what innovation - and utilization of locally found materials |
