These are general questions to anyone, but especially to someone who regulary shoots gas checked or non checked cast bullets in gas operated automatics.

Do lead shavings ever get into the gas piston or gas tube and cause problems?

Is there any health hazard from vaporized lead particles coming out of the gas system beyond that from shooting lead bullets in any other rifle such as a bolt action?

I have never used naa-kid lead bullets in my gas operated firearms for this unanswered question. Is this a valid concern or am I

offhand im thinkin the health risk is very minimal - as to the fowling im nowhere near qualified to answer ,
we played with mercury as kids - no one died - ono one even got sick ,
we cast a whole army of lead soldiers for each of us - no one died - no one got sick , and as far as i can see most were fairlly successful in a midle class sort a way so im thinking the brain cells survived , i think i inhaled a lot more lead fumes than you will be able to get from your rifle

That was not a rant. That was imparting practical knowledge and experience to those of us who wondered but were afraid to ask or did not have ready access to a lab that could check the body for heavy metals.

That was the way I interpreted it, your rant, but I did not consider it a rant at all. I may resume casting my own. I can't believe the cost of gas checks though $22-24 /1000 double ouch. I like to use them to reduce fouling. Your comments on the 800 degree temperature of lead was instructive. I also cast mine in the open air with a little breeze or fan and make sure I am upwind of the pot.
