Just been re-reading Bishop and Drury's "Combat Weapons".

In an intro into WW1 MGs, the picture a LMG which they refer to as MG 08/15.

Tubular receive, air cooled. Developed from a WW1 aircraft gun and converted for WW2 ground use.

But, in the article on the MG 08/15, they show and describe a Maxim derivative. Lightened Maxim with a stock and pistol grip.
Different fish.

Looked for it in Smith's "Small Arms of the World".
It mentions an MG 15 that fits the story....but no pics.
What's the deal?

That's one of them.....weighs 39.7 pounds, complete.
There was an air-cooled version late in WW1. MG 08/18. A bit lighter.

Other one is, entirely different. Tubular receiver....much lighter
Developed from an aircraft gun.
I am guessing the writers got it wrong and it is, really, the MG15.

I guess the authors did screw up calling it the MG 08/15.
