Here's your laugh for the day, but I really don't know. What is the difference between 5.56 and 223? Are they interchangable? My AR sez 5.56 on the barrel & I loaded up some 223 which doesn't feed too well. The gun might need "shot in" or do I need to change to dedicated 5.56 ammo? Umb-day in Nebr, SW |

Steve, It is a relevant question. Nato and other military ammunition labeled as 5.56mm is manufactured for rifles that have longer throats than many domestic or non military rifles (223 Remington). I am not sure how your ar15 is throated. Either make up a dummy round with the bullet seated out or get some genuine US 5.56 ball ammo and mark the bullet with a sharpie, chamber and eject it and see if the bullet has been forced back into the case neck. Also look for engraving marks on the ogive. 5.56mm Nato ammo is loaded to higher pressure specs than 223 so some rifles might not be certified for the higher pressure. Mil cases may be heavier, but I don't think there is any external dimensional difference. Make sure the cases are sized properly. Some mil chambers might be tight and require a small base sizer die. yes , there is a subtle difference but its in the chamber not the round for feeding purposes , the 556 nato chamber is slightly more comfortable for less finicky operations , as to the cartridges the 223 is a tad bit thinner brass more roomy for less pressure than the thicker less roomy nato cartridges thus more pressure , having said that , most of my DPMS rifles are labled for both

hogger as a side note what is your rate of twist on that barrel?. some are 1-12,1-9,1-8 and some colts ran a 1-7 twist.the faster twist barrels shoot the heavier bullets better. pete |

I got a model1 kit - 1 turn in 9", I believe. So far I'm just trying to get it shot in - accuracy tuning follows that. SW |

my barrel is a 1-9 and the 62 gr bullets are the answer.when you get to tweaking it... AA2520 has turn some of my best groups. pete |

my colt M16A1 is a 1/12 - works great with the 22LR conversion i run in it [22LR kinda likes about a 1/14 IIRC]   my 20" A3 is 1/9 , as is my AP4 16" carbine , i run nearly all 55 grains thru those cheaper and plentiful here , but ive pushed some of the 62s as well and they do run a tad more accurately , my model 1 sales dedicated 22LR upper is 1/12 |

actually wont be an issue with the lower , it will have to do with the upper receiver chamber , but should be fixable quite easily with a light touch with a chamber ream - however before you alter the chamber check the ammo , it is more likely to be the problem |

Hogger, I misread you original post. Were you using factory 223 or home rolled and what brand? Might make a difference. |
