Just brought home my first 1911(not a 1911A1), and am wondering where I go to check the serial for a production date, or for that matter, how I can find a production date otherwise?

glad you got your data , i like lohn spanglers site and go there often [buy too] but there are those that complain about the data base for some weapons - i think its the m1903s/A3s that get the complaints ,

Colt 1919 [continued from 1918] started at 551000 shipped 76154 that year , guess that confirms it - looking forward to your photos

Here is my Colt 1918. I also have a 1917. This one had been reblued in the past. I was lucky also to pick up a 1917 Boyt holster with a Marine Lt Colonel's name on it. He is buried at Arlington Nat Cem, having died in 1973.

thats a beauty and a very nice holster , my leather is much more worn than yours ,


and although it is original finish [black army] it was not a very durable finish so my pistol is not the fine looking finish of yours either


these are a very interesting area of collecting tho and one could get lost in this alone if the funds were available

smith , i like shooting these a lot , the shear size of them makes the cartrige a dream to shoot - tames them to the feel of the 38

Thanks Crunch. I have always been a firm believer in the "if you can't hit it, it doesn't matter" crowd. Now I have a different perspective 8)
A nicely tuned .45 can be worth as much in the grab as a sub-machine gun.
It all depends on the gun, and it's carrier.
I have learned much from this purchase.
Dare I say that I'm now a fan......stranger things have happened.

sounds like a great pistol , ive never had the opportunity to shoot a tuned one , it would indeed be the carry if it functions that well , thats why my S&W39 is the one i do-i shoot well with it
