It should have a slide stop on the LH side at the front, top side of the grip

I really was afraid they were going to laugh at my offer but my jaw dropped when they took it. When I can pay for it and I get it I'll look for that slide stop, I just can't remember there being one as I was trying to lock it back to look at the bore.

Yes, if it has an external hammer, you stole it. I have two boxes of vintage yellow box WW 38 ACP ammo for a possible trade as I will never own another.

Last one I saw was well into 4 figures. SW

Re. the Colt automatic:

Be sure NOT to shoot .38 Super ammo in your .38 automatic.

Repeat: .38 ACP OK; .38 Super NO GO. The cases are the same size.

The .38 ACP has a velocity of around 1,070 fps, and the .38 Super has a velocity of around 1,300 fps.

Back around the turn of the 20th century, Colt made two basic design .38 automatics. The first one, with a long slide, was called the Colt Sporting automatic. A sub version of this was called the Military (also with a long slide). The Colt pictured in this post (short slide) came along after these and was called the Colt Model L Pocket pistol. Not to be confused with the .32 ACP pocket model which was smaller and on a different frame.

The Colt .38 auto in it's day was the Cat's Pajamas, more powerful that just about any revolver and having the auto-load feature thrown in.

Re. the VIS Radom automatic pistol:

These later guns came with two different kinds of grip retaining screws. Some had the bushing with a separate grip screw (like a Colt auto), and others just had one fat-based screw to hold the grips on. You need to match the correct type of grips to the type of screws used. I think you mentioned that there was a buggered screw thread on this one. If so, if you can, use the kind of screws that use an intermediate bushing. That way, you can sweat the bushing into the hole with the buggered threads and still be able to take the grips off with the small screws. The grip bushing isn't under that much stress, so sweating it on should be a nice long fix.

Thanks for the info. On the Colt what kind of bluing did they have to begin with? I would like to redo this one.

On the Radom, I have bought the repo grips but I now have to figure out the screw issue.
