I got my income tax back this week, so I went to a local shop to see what I could spend it on. I found an Egyptian Helwan M92. Looked to be in good shape so I brought it home with me.

Looks like a fun shooter. It should be good to keep the possums out of the dog food on the back porch! SW

And the best part is that I only paid $185 for it. I still have money left to go back for more. He has had a vz24 there for over a year now. It has the crest ground but looks decent. I may go back and ask about it.

I think it is the M1951 not M92.
I have a Helwan, and like it. I have a problem with my grips curling and separating over time, but it doesn't effect functioning. It shoots right on, and has never jammed. Well occasionally I get the first round jam as I rack the slide, but after it's in, it's good. I just use it as a plinker and don't keep one chambered. Unique safety, but not enough trust in it to carry with one in the pipe.

I researched it last night AFTER I bought it (that is a bad habit). :-? The 1951 is the Beretta original model. This is an Egyptian contract. Beretta contracted to Egypt to make these for the Egyptian military. These are a direct copy of the Beretta 1951 Brigadier. The accepted name is Maadi Helwan model 92. They are not a C&R weapon and must go through an 01FFL. As opposed to the Beretta M1951 Brigadier which is, as I understand, C&R elligable. These are not an original Beretta but an Egyptian copy. Parts, however are interchangeable. similar to the way a k98 and vz24 are.

Strange... since I bought mine in 1988 and have it recorded as Maadi M-51. Don't recall where I got that number, or where the '92' comes from.

It was difficult to determine what the model number is and it is possible that I may have confused the model number with a later model. I have since found some sites that call it a Helwan model 51. The model 92 is a Beretta and is of higher capacity.
Here are some of the links that I found while checking it out:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beretta_M_1951

http://www.gunsworld.com/exploded/berettam51.htm

Here is a list that calls it the Helwan H9 Brigadier
http://open-encyclopedia.com/List_of_firearms#H
http://securityarms.com/20010315/galler ... 0/1831.htm

After further study, it seems that some like to call it the Maadi Helwan 51. this name is a cross between the Egyptian model and the Italian original.

It is also known as the Maadi Helwan H9 Brigadier, commercially, which would also be a cross over name with it's Italian counterpart.

Militarily, it appears that it is known as the Maadi Helwan H9.

So there ya have it! Apparently,it depends upon where you got you info from. :)

Here are some pics of one that I bought a couple of years ago. I think I paid $150 for it. I took it to the range once and was not impressed. I was shooting winchester Value pac ammo. I had a bunch of jams. The slide ramp is almost nonexistant. The metal work is crude. I would discribe it as a poor mans beretta. I keep it just to have one.I was thinking I might polish the ramp and angle it more so it feeds better. I am sure there are people out there that have not had issues with them or might have and fixed it. If you did , please tell! Anyway I know you all love pics, so here it's.

From what I gathered so far, it seams that Egypt was producing some to specifically sell to the US market, while others were genuine surplus. The examples that are of inferior quality could be the pieces made expressly for export, such as yours may be. Others, people like and say they have had no issues with could be the genuine issued examples. I am convinced I will have to determine the worth of mine after it has had some rounds pass through it. I am now also satisfied that the correct name for this weapon is the Maadi Helwan H9.

Mine appears to be the Egyptian Military along with the Arabic markings and serial number. A new serial was stamped on the other side.
