Hi guys, I am looking to rebush a barrel from a mosin nagant 7.62x54 to fit a Steyr m95 has anyone done this project? I recently purchased a delta Rockwell 14x42 lathe and would like to slowly try make a custom rifle. And do it right! I have a .060 headspace guage for Steyr yet to get a finish reamer for the 7.62.
So what I think I need to know is how far did the mosin nagant barrel get turned down to fit a bushing? Thanks for any information.

Shootster,

I had a reply almost ready to send and accidentally ? lost it. I have done this with several calibers, but used 98 large ring barrels from Argentine or Belgium in 7.65 Arg. The pitch 12 tpi is the same and diameter a little larger so no need to bush. I think the thread is 55 degree Whitworth. Had to extend the thread past the barrel stop so a threaded collar stop like on a Savage might be necessary. There should be enough chamber reinforce to chase the original chamber. Also there are some 98s in 308 NATO, but you have to use careful throating like on the D chamber Finn rifles. I think the groove on these is .3085 as in some of the Finns. Tight. I have not done this in years so the info is rusty.

I cannot say anymore for now as we are watching Dorian and are only 50-55 miles from the Georgia Carolina coast. We may be dead meat no matter which way she turns

Yeah it a lot of fun to do projects. I think this is going to be a reduced load gun for shooting it's not going to be for high pressure loads haven't got back to it I bushed it buts other things pushed it aside

I know the feeling well. Sometimes a project - like building the race revolver - languishes for years until I get around to it. SW
