I used to think silent picture were boring, but I usually enjoy them now. They are much better than much of what Hollyweird churns out now, with the gangsta themes and other such krapola. When you watch movies like "Battleship Potemkin" you can also look at the locations where they are set and see places, like Odessa, Ukraine and its harbor, and know that they no longer look like this. It's pretty interesting to look at the old battleship and the sailers moving around over her; this is one of the old-timers with the turrets in the side of the hull in addition to the main turrets on the decks. When you watch silent movies, you have to pay attention so as to read the titles; you can't reload and listen and follow the story without watching the screen.

In the days when silent pictures were shown in movie houses, they were accompanied by a theater organ in large theaters and pianos in smaller ones. Over time, the largest theaters had enormous theater organs with many ranks of pipes, all kinds of sound effects, etc. During certain times of the year, the old Paramount Theater in Seattle has theater organ nights where you can enjoy this "blast from the past."

Not too much of a stretch Gary.I have a photo in an old book showing Russian soldiers in WW1 suurendering to the Austrians-they have their M95 rifles stuck in the ground muzzle down (bayonet in ground?) & their hands in the air. I'd scan it,but its one of the books that went to the attic.-TR

It's understandable that the Russians would equip their WW1 "rabble Army" with captured weapons, but the Potemkin incident took place in 1905. I guess they could have had some M95's before WW1; Navies sometimes procure things outside of normal channels.

It's a pretty interesting one. Propaganda film about a pretty famous incident. Certainly not like the movies of today though!
