I can't see as much as I would like in the pictures, but I vote for it being a sporterized M95 Dutch Mannlicher of some sort. The cartridge in the picture doesn't look like a 6.5x53R, because it doesn't appear to have a rim. I wonder if it has been rechambered to some other 6.5 caliber? Or maybe it isn't the correct cartridge for this rifle?

There are Mannlicher-Schoenauers with spoon-handle bolts, but I don't think this is one of them. This looks like a bolt that has been modified.

Nice looking pattern in the stock.

A lot of Mannlichers were sporterized and used in Africa. The Brit company, Jeffrey made several sporters of military rifles for the African market.

Which were used on dangerous game to a greater extent than I imagined. WDM 'Karamojo' Bell shot hundreds of elephant using a '6.5 Mannlicher'. He greatly preferred the long, parallel-sided ( 160 grain) bullet as it gave superior penetration. His 'meat' rifle was a 7mm Mauser - AKA 275 in the Brit ammo catalogs around 1900.

I just finished the Hemingway novel, "True at First Light", and he also used a 6.5 Mannlicher but he only used it as a meat rifle. I believe his wife used it on a lion!

His 'big bore' was a 30-06 Springfield. SW

I remember reading about Karamojo Bell a long long time ago. It appears that the reason for his success is that he was a good shot and knew where the achillies heel was. His elephant kills were brain shots. The one thing that puzzles me is the articles I read were espousing the 7MM mauser and they claim he used a 7x57mm on the elephants and did not even mention the 6.5. You don't suppose someone in their haste to support one cartridge forgot the other. The upshot (pun intended) is that shot placement can be as important as the energy of the bullet reguardless of whether it was 6.5 or 7mm. It did not take a 410 Rigby. Then again some people like to live life on the edge.
