I picked up 2 more Vetterlis recently - still rimfire. I swapped out the rimfire bolt in one of them (hereinafter known as the "Paris" Vetterli, or the Paris auction Vetterli) for the centerfire converted one (the "Nebraska" -thanks again NebrHogger!) (I can't remember serial numbers, so they have to have names). If I worked the bolt gently I had no problem, but if I pulled it hard enough to activate the elevator it would jam, hard enough that a couple of times I had to use a brass punch and tap the edge of the elevator until it retracted. I've seen a number of posts to the effect that the chambers and bores may vary from one rifle to another, but are the bolts and elevators also different dimensions? I ended up taking out the elevator and leaving just the spring activating mechanism in, to single shot fire form some cases in the Paris rifle. And I guess I'll only be able to fire single shot until I get the Paris bolt converted? |

At the time these were made, completely interchangable parts were still a few years away. You will see this on Italian Vetterlis with their "PP" on the top barrel flat. I'm too lazy to walk over & get my notes ( just got home from playing trains all day in a rip=snorter of a blizzard) but the words mean "interchangable parts". Whicch was a big deal at the time. Further, the models may not be identical. Even among Carcanos, I find myself hand fitting parts when interchanging from one rifle to another. SW |
