Ok, dumb question, but I've never owned any counterbored postwar rework K98k's ... was there a typical 'prescribed' depth to which these were counterbored? I'm guessing maybe between 1"-2" would be enough to get past damage at the end of the bore from cleaning rods, water droplets, oil, dirt, etc?

It all depends on who was doing the counterboring. Some did it as standard procedure whether they needed it or not and I am unaware if everyone used the same set depth.
I base this on several SA marked Finn captured M91/30s that had perfect bores, but were counterbored.

....I would think the counterbore depth would be as deep as needed to get back to where the decent lands and grooves still were...
