A newly acquired Infantry Gewehr M1871 made in 1877.  It was missing the clearing rod but every piece ( and I mean every piece) except the butt plate is numbered and matching.  Someone much more knowledgable than I will have to weigh in on why this one has a different butt plate.  There is no rust or corrosion and the wood is very good.

When I got this rifle it was covered with what I took to be a very old and really dried on coating of motor oil.  It was not like cosmoline and really didn't want to come off!  It made an otherwise beautiful gun look very bad, almost a "rusty" look.

The 71's are great old rifles. The stampings on the tang indicate the unit it was assigned to down to what number the gun assigned was. The photo is hard to read, but you can go to: www.cruffler.com to learn about the service history of your arm.
