What you have is a WW l small ring 98 mauser that has been slightly sporterised by cutting the stock down. By it not being converted to civilian use it should still be in 8 x 57 mm. If all of the numbers match you might pick up another Kar 98 stock and bands for restoration. Was there any numbers on or in the stock and if so do they match the receiver?

It is actually a Kar 98a (or 98aZ). That is what is up at the top of the page in the YWF forum logo I think if any were rechambered they were defaced of any military markings & would have markings of the maker who did the conversion as well as civilian proofs.

If you can get that back into military trim, she would be a dandy!
Not sure what old Jesse davis was thinking when he did that to the poor stock

i think he was thinking of his legacy - much like all the recent presidents have been , but as you see he succeded - got us to look anyway ,

that should be a wonderfull rifle and quite able to return to military trim if you choose , but id guess perfectly satisfactory as is if you want a shooter that performs well

Its shoots wonderful as is, but I'm going to restore it to military trim . . . or do my best to, this is all new for me
