Experiments with Turkish Pull-down Powder - .30-06

Today I did some experiments with some of the pulled-down powder from Turkish 8x57mm ammo.

.30-06 load for bolt-action rifles:

45.0 grains Turkish pull-down cut-sheet powder
150 grain .308 US milsurp FMJ pull-down bullet
USGI cases
Federal 210 primers
Average muzzle velocity 2790 fps
Standard deviation 17.36
Accuracy 3/4 inch group @ 50 yards

I would not recommend loads any higher than this charge. The muzzle velocity is just about at the upper limit for comparable loads in the reloading manuals for this bullet weight. My experiments indicate that this powder is not suitable for loading for the M-1 rifle. Previously I tested this load for function in my M-1 rifle, and it would not cycle the action most of the time. A charge increased enough to cycle the action would no doubt put the muzzle velocity in an area greater than those shown as acceptable for use in the M-1 rifle (NRA data).

I am not equipped to do pressure tests. In fact, muzzle velocity isn't always an indicator of excess pressure. Experiments done by others have shown that it often happens that an over-pressure situation can exist WITHOUT corresponding increases in muzzle velocity. If you use reasonable caution in reloading, muzzle velocity can be used to see what "ball park" you are in. This is why I do not want to exceed those velocities that are considered "normal" for the other specified components.

For your own purposes, I advise you to start with a load 10% below that shown above and work up, watching for high pressure signs. Make sure your rifle is safe to shoot, etc. Do not substitute Winchester primers. You use this data at your own risk.
