Cannelure on Bullets
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I mentioned this problem on another post, but will elaborate just a little here.

Sometimes you will find that the cannelure (serrated ring around the shank of the bullet for crimping case into) varies from one bullet to the next of what you think is the "same" bullet. You will have trimmed all of your cases and find that when seating the bullet, whether you crimp or not, that the cannelure is in a different position from one shell to the next. Your first thought may be, "My trimming is off". Not necessarily. Sometimes it is the cannelure that is "off".

I find this to be true more of bullets purchased in large batches, like the "bulk" bullets that Midway sells. It must be that bullets poured into these bulk shipments are sometimes processed on more than one machine and then blended. If one canneluring machine is off just a little from the next, the discrepancy will ensue.

Of course, I have found this problem with pulled milsurp bullets too, but this is to be expected because who knows how many different lots those could come from.

You are less apt to encounter this problem when you buy bullets from the major manufacturers in boxes of 100, where the batch integrity and quality control is the highest. In so doing, however, you are going to pay the highest price. This follows the normal addage in economics that you get what you pay for.

In dealing with this problem when encountered, you can treat it a couple of ways. You can "batch out" the bullets by inspecting each one and sorting them into batches by cannelure location. This way you can load each batch as to its respective appropriate bullet seating depth.

A faster way that disregards appearance of finished product would be to load them all without regard to cannelure position and use a factory crimp die when seating the bullet. A variation on this would be to load them all at once as above, but seat the bullet and crimp with a taper crimp in a separate operation.

I think I prefer one of the techniques that does not involve inspecting each individual bullet and loading in separate batches. The process descriped above using a factory crimp die could be used on a progressive press.

Naturally, this isn't a problem at all if you do not crimp your ammo and if you don't care about appearance.

I always go by OAL and crimp the bullet regards of the canalure position. I never shoot match and do the best my old eyes can anyway!

NORMALLY, if you crimp anywhere near the cannelure using COMMERCIAL BULLETS you shouldn't wind up with overall length problems. This is not the case with milsurp bullets, for example 7.62 NATO bullets in 7.5x55mm Swiss or some throats in .30-06.
