i was thinking about this.....i shot some of gary's 8mm mag the other day~i am the one who loaded the ammo~ standard loads, not maxed out, standard primers, and every now and then, when the trigger dropped the firing pin(rem 700adl)...there would be a delay....maybe a 1/4 sec....but there.....you could ear the firing pin, then BOOM....... kinda unnerving~ click boom on a magnum~
looking at the cases we shot, no difference in and primer setback etc.....wonder if it's just the std primers, or powder laying flat in that big case?

I think if you had used magnam primers you would not have had the hangfire problem.

I think the concept is that if you don't want the recoil of an 8mm mag, shoot your milsurp Mausers. I believe these work best with loads near full throttle. SW

I would vote for your going to a magnum primer and see what happens with the otherwise same load. You didn't say what powder was used; if it is a slow number typically used in magnum rifle cartridges, this could be the problem. You also didn't say what brand primer you did use. Tests have been done and some makes of primer are known to generate higher pressures (given the same load otherwise) than others. I think we can take out of this that some burn hotter, too. Winchester is the brand that generates the highest pressures among the various brands tested.

The use of reduced loads using slow-burning propellants is never recommended, regardless of primer brand and type. Some people who are more knowledgeable that I am believe this can lead to a secondary detonation that takes place before the bullet leaves the barrel. Needless to say, this is a dangerous and destructive situation. Look at our other posts in this same forum; I think I did a write up on this phenomenon.

The speer book says to use the magnum primer with all loads.
When you use a light load in a carbine like a VZ 33 you can really tell the difference.
