I have a break action single shot Handi rifle in .35 Whelen and I have some lead bullets, but I can't find loads using the powders I've got. I have some loads for .38 S&W using Titegroup and Vihtavuori N-340. They work like a charm in the S&W .38. Can I use the same data for the .35 Whelen? Same bullet, same powder, but different size cases. I have no fears the load would get the bullet down and out of the longer barrel no problem but I'm wondering how much of a difference the bigger case would make. Maybe top off the load with some filler? Or am I just asking for a big explosion? I have (.35 Whelen) loads for jacketed bullets of similar weights close to the weights of the lead bullets I have. Can I just go ahead and use that data as is? Reduce by 10%? Apparently the .35 Whelen is supposed to be "THE" lead bullet rifle. But there are precious few loads published. I just don't want to go out and buy more bullets and more powder just to use a published load if what I have will work. This is just for paper targets. Once I have a load that works I can fiddle with it to get it to one I like. |

I don't know that I'd use jacketed loads for cast bullets. Something to consider would be 35 Rem data. I saw cast loads for that somewhere. Start with middle of the road loads & work up from that point to achieve accuracy. SW |

My Lyman Cast Bullet book has loads for 35 Remington and 358 Winchester. Lyman reloading manual #49 also has those calibers & even has a few cast bullet loads for 35 Whelan. So the good news is you have published data available. Of the suitable powders listed, I like AA 5744. SW |

But that would make things too easy if one powder worked for everything. AA 5744 is a good all around powder for cast bullets. SW |
